With increasing use of treadmills as fitness maintainer, their presence in the market has also increased. Several models of treadmills, from cheap, refurbished to the most expensive ones are available today. But like any other machine, treadmills too tend to get wear and tear. The more you use it, the more soon will its components get exhausted.

Almost all treadmills, after the expiry of its warranty period require much replacement and repair so that it keeps functioning well. Many people refrain from spending on repair and maintenance costs. Well, if your treadmill is of low quality, you surely wouldn’t be preferring to spend your precious money on a low grade machine. Instead you will be interested in buying a new model altogether. But if you have a treadmill of a reputed brand, you would surely like to spend money on refurbishing your treadmill. Equipment maintenance is very important for your treadmill at home. You need regular servicing of your exercising machine. If you are not finding time to get your treadmill repaired at a service center, then it becomes important for you to perform service on your own.

The important parts of your treadmill are the motor, the belt, the deck and the display screen. There are certain basic things that you should keep in mind while repairing your treadmill. You should start repairing your treadmill with its most important part, which is a motor.

Constant cleaning of the motor is necessary. This helps it to make dust free. Next to the motor comes the treadmill belt. You should always keep the track of your belt’s condition. If you are uncomfortable with it, you should replace it. There is another aspect to the cleaning process. You should constantly apply grease to the chain that supports the belt. Greasing it constantly will make the life of your treadmill’s chain longer. It is also very important for you to examine the deck of your treadmill regularly.

Lubricating your deck also forms an important part of a treadmill repairman exercise. As the treadmill becomes old and much used, the belt tends to lose its balance. After a certain period of time, the treadmill belts do not remain centered. They get tracked either towards the left or the right. This type of defect can be repaired at your home easily with a screw driver. A proper balance is important for good exercising.

Any machine has a tendency to make noise. The same is true with your treadmill. The more you use it, the more it will become noisy. These symptoms show that now is the time for you to refurbish the motor of your treadmill. But replacing a motor is not an easy task. You should be careful about the compatibility of the new motor that you are intending to use. Most of the treadmill manufacturing brands have in their offer the replacement of parts of their models that includes belt and motor.

If you have these company replacement offers with you, then you would save heavy repair expenses. Apart from the motor and the belt, you may also find a need to replace the display screen of your treadmill.

Treadmills are complex machines with lots of parts. For you, the treadmill owner, that means lots of things that can break! Here are a few common repair jobs that you can do yourself. Treadmill repair doesn’t have to be a headache.

If Your Treadmill Runs Fine… Until You Step Onto It

Your well honed exercise routine won’t do you much good if your treadmill grinds to an agonizing halt every time you step on it. It’s not meant to be a piece of furniture, so let’s figure out how to fix it and get you running again.

Chances are, that belt is too old and worn. If you just bought the machine, it’s the fault of the manufacturer, and it should be covered under warranty. If you’ve had it for a while, it might need to be replaced.

Now, your instruction manual will probably provide better instructions complete with pretty pictures, but here’s the long and short of it. UNPLUG the machine. I’ll say that again. UNPLUG the machine! Then, your treadmill will have some sort of hood that you will have to remove on the deck with a screwdriver. After you’ve got it open, you’ll need to loosen the belt with your screwdriver and slip it off. Put the new one on just the way you took the old one off… but in reverse.

It Runs, But It Has A Mind Of Its Own!

It’s tough to get the proper workout when your treadmill keeps jumping back and forth between different speeds. Sometimes a treadmill will decide to do its own thing, taking its owner on a wild bucking bronco roller coaster ride that could end in damaged body parts.

The good news is: it probably needs to be cleaned. The bad news is: it probably needs to be cleaned. Speed jumps are often the result of dirty speed sensors. The electronics on the machine are maybe covered in dust and need to be polished up.

Speaking of cleaning, a little routine cleaning will go a long way towards helping your treadmill work right and extending the life of its parts. Dusting off the electronics is good; so is opening it up and cleaning the belt once in a while. You can buy lubricant and belt cleaners at your fitness supply store that will make that baby run smoother than ever.

No Problem At All Except For That Horrible Burning Smell

Something’s burning. That’s not right. We definitely have a problem here.

First and foremost, unplug the machine and don’t even think about turning it on again. Something is rubbing against something else in a way that it’s not supposed to, and it’s destroying your treadmill with every step. Usually, opening the deck and readjusting the belt will fix the problem. If you bought a really cheap treadmill, it may self-destruct by cooking its insides and there’s not much you can do but upgrade.

If something’s burning, you may have a problem with your motor. Replacing the motor is something you can definitely do by yourself, but you have to follow your instruction manual carefully, and make sure you buy just the right replacement motor.

Know your machine, and you can fix most problems yourself. There will always be routine maintenance needed to keep it running the way it should. Treadmill repair isn’t rocket science; just be sure you keep that instruction manual somewhere!

Treadmill Repair

Treadmill Repair is not as hard as you might think. Try some basic troubleshooting techniques and do your own treadmill repair.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

The first and most important part of owning a treadmill or any piece of equipment is doing preventive maintenance. If you are not currently doing this then start today!

Now let us get started!

ALWAYS UNPLUG THE TREADMILL OR ANY EQUIPMENT BEFORE REPAIR!

Remove the hood or motor cover. There will probably be anywhere from 2 to 8 screws. Now vacuum the dust from around the motor and drive mechanisms. What you can’t get to with the vacuum, use a small cloth or brush. A clean motor runs smoothly
and does not overheat.

After you have cleaned around the motor, look for grease fittings, these are usually found on commercial grade units, but your unit may have them also.

For those of you who have never seen one, they are about the size of a pencil eraser and have a hole in the end. They are normally found on the bearings. If you don’t have a grease gun you can buy a small gun and grease at your local auto parts store for less than $10.00.

If your unit is chain driven, clean the chain of excess dust, and apply a small amount of grease to the chain, also grease the drive chain and elevation chain as necessary. Use white lithium grease if available.

Check all drive belts for wear, look for cuts and nicks, and replace as needed.

Loosen the walking belt. Most treadmills have either a bolt or screw on each side at the rear of the unit. Loosen these, push the rear roller toward the walking deck until the belt is loose enough for you to look underneath.

Raise the belt and inspect the underside for wear. If it looks worn or burned you need to replace the belt.

Inspect the walking deck for wear, you will be able to tell if it is worn. If it has little ruts worn into it or bare spots it needs to be either flipped or replaced.

Many treadmills today have walking decks that can be flipped. If your deck is worn flip it, but it is recommended that when you flip the deck you also replace the walking belt.

Wipe the deck and the underside of the belt with a soft cloth. Depending on your model of treadmill you should lubricate the walking deck at least every 6 months. Some units use silicone spray or gel. Others use wax. Check your owner’s manual for what the manufacturer recommends.

After you have cleaned the belt and deck and lubricated the deck as needed center the belt on the walking platform and tighten the screws at the end of the treadmill.

Turn each bolt the same amount to keep the belt centered. Tighten the belt until it does not move freely on the rollers. Then with CAUTION straddle the belt and start the treadmill at low speed.

Wait for the belt to start moving then step on the belt. If it stops, it is not tight enough. Step off the belt and tighten each side 1 turn then step on the belt again. Repeat as necessary.

Once you can walk on the belt at low speed without it stopping or slipping increase the speed to 3 miles per hour. This should be a fast walk. If your unit has side rails hold the rails and try to stop the belt with pressure.

IF ok then increase the speed to 5 MPH. Run on the treadmill, if you feel any slipping tighten the bolts another 1/2 turn each. Repeat if necessary.

If the belt is not centered, stand behind the treadmill and run the belt at full speed, if the belt is tracking to the left. Tighten the left bolt or screw 1/2 of a turn, and loosen the right bolt or screw 1/4 turn until the belt is centered.

IF the belt is tracking to the right, tighten the right side bolt or screw 1/2 turn and loosen the left bolt or screw 1/4 turn. Repeat as necessary, this should center the walking belt.

Always wipe the treadmill down after each use, as perspiration is very corrosive.
